Why Some Commenters Don't Get the DM (and What to Check)

19 October 2026

If most people get the DM and a handful do not, the automation is working and the gap is almost always explained by the individual commenter: their privacy settings, a repeated comment, an unfinished follow-gate, or Instagram's one-reply-per-comment rule. The per-automation funnel in Viralyze (comments, matched, delivered, clicked) shows where each person dropped out, which is the fastest way to tell which of these it is.

Below are the four checks, roughly in order of how often they turn out to be the cause.

Did the comment actually match?

Open the funnel first. If the comments count is higher than the matched count, some comments did not contain a keyword. Viralyze matching is not case-sensitive and tolerates typos, emojis and Hinglish, but it cannot match a word that is not in the keyword list.

Look at the unmatched comments on the post. "Need this" or a heart emoji alone will not match a "LINK" keyword. If a pattern shows up, add it as an extra keyword. Multiple keywords per automation are supported, and different keywords can send different replies.

Why would a matched comment not be delivered?

If matched is higher than delivered, Instagram declined to send or the recipient could not receive. The common causes are:

  • The person has message requests from businesses turned off, or restricts messages from accounts they do not follow. The DM is sent but lands in their requests folder or is blocked entirely. This is outside any tool's control.
  • The same person already received a private reply on that comment. Instagram allows one private reply per comment, and Viralyze follows this, so a second comment on the same post gets a reply only if it is a new comment.
  • The comment is older than seven days.
  • The account commenting is restricted, blocked, or has blocked you.

A consistent example: a Pilates instructor had 212 comments on a "FORM" reel, 198 matched and 181 delivered. The 17 undelivered were nearly all accounts that did not follow her and had message requests restricted. Nothing to fix; she replied publicly to those with "check your requests folder".

Is the follow-gate holding the link back?

If you turned on the follow-gate, people who do not follow you get a polite nudge instead of the link. Viralyze sends up to three nudges, then the link. People who already follow get the link immediately.

From the outside this can look like "they did not get the DM" when in fact they got the nudge and stopped. Check the conversation in the Inbox; you will see the nudge messages. If a large share of people stall at the gate, consider turning it off for low-ticket freebies and keeping it for higher-value offers.

Did the same person comment twice?

Repeated comments are a frequent source of confusion. Someone comments "price", gets the DM, then comments "price??" again an hour later and expects a second one. Instagram treats each comment separately, so the second comment is eligible for its own private reply, but only if it is a new comment and not an edit of the first. Edited comments do not re-trigger.

What should I tell the commenter?

Reply publicly with one line: "Sent, check your message requests if you don't see it." The public reply variation in Viralyze can already say this on every trigger, which cuts the follow-up questions. For people who still cannot find it, the link is also on your link-in-bio page, so point them there.

Frequently asked questions

**Can I resend the DM manually to someone who did not get it?** You can message them from Instagram directly within the 24-hour window if they have replied, or send the link in a normal DM from the Instagram app at any time.

**Does the funnel show names of people who were not delivered?** The funnel shows counts; the Inbox and contacts list show the individuals who did receive and reply.

**Will turning off the follow-gate improve delivery?** It removes the gate step, so more people get the link on the first message, but it does not change Instagram-side delivery limits.
