Why Isn't My Keyword Triggering? A Troubleshooting Guide
When a keyword does not trigger, the cause is almost always one of six things, and none of them is mysterious. The automation may not be Live, it may be attached to the wrong post, the account may not be a professional account, the Instagram connection may have lapsed, the comment may be too old, or you may be testing from your own account. Is the automation actually Live?
Check the state first, because a Scheduled or Paused automation will never send a DM. Viralyze shows four states: Scheduled, Live, Paused and Needs attention.
If you chose "start with my next post" during setup, the automation stays Scheduled until a new post goes up. If you set a start date, it waits for that date. If you set auto-pause after a number of days or DMs, it may have hit that limit and paused itself.
Needs attention means something outside the automation is wrong, usually the Instagram connection. Open it and follow the prompt.
Is it watching the right post?
A comment-on-a-specific-post trigger only fires on that one post. If you set it up on last week's reel and people are commenting on today's reel, nothing will send.
Open the automation and confirm the post thumbnail. If you want it to work everywhere, switch the trigger to "comments on any post". If you want story replies covered too, that is a separate trigger type.
Does the keyword match what people are typing?
Keywords in Viralyze are not case-sensitive and they tolerate Hinglish spellings, emojis and typos, so "link", "LINK" and "Link pls" all match a "LINK" keyword. What it cannot do is match a word you never added.
A concrete example: a nutritionist set the keyword "MEALPLAN" and watched comments saying "meal plan" with a space go unanswered for two days. Adding "meal plan" and "plan" as extra keywords fixed it. Add every variation you can think of; multiple keywords per automation are free.
Use the live tester before going live with the exact comment you expect.
Why does Instagram block some triggers?
Instagram only allows one private reply per comment, and only within seven days of that comment. Viralyze follows these rules automatically, so a comment from eight days ago will not get a DM even if you turn the automation on today, and a commenter who already received a private reply on that comment will not get a second one.
Two more Instagram-side conditions apply. Auto-DM needs a Business or Creator account, and the commenter's own privacy settings can stop message requests reaching them.
Are you testing from your own account?
Commenting on your own post from the same account does not behave like a stranger commenting. Instagram treats a self-comment differently, so a missing DM in that test proves nothing.
Test with a second account, or ask a friend to comment. Then watch the per-automation funnel: comments, matched, delivered, clicked. If "matched" goes up but "delivered" does not, the issue is on Instagram's side or the recipient's settings. If "matched" stays at zero, the keyword or post is wrong.

1. Open the automation and confirm the state is Live. 2. Confirm the post thumbnail, or switch to "any post". 3. Add spelling variations of the keyword. 4. Run the live tester with a realistic comment. 5. Check the account is Business or Creator. 6. Reconnect Instagram if the state says Needs attention.
Frequently asked questions
**Does the keyword need to be the whole comment?** No. "Link please" and "can I get the LINK" both match a "LINK" keyword, because matching is not case-sensitive and ignores surrounding words.
**Will people who commented before I turned it on get the DM?** Only if their comment is less than seven days old and has not already received a private reply, because that is Instagram's limit.
**Can I see why a specific comment did not match?** Yes, the funnel on each automation shows comments against matched and delivered counts, and the live tester lets you replay the exact text.
