Why Does Instagram Require a Professional Account for Automation?

19 October 2026

Instagram requires a professional account because the official API that automation tools use is only available to Business and Creator accounts. A personal account simply has no permission to send private replies or read comments through an app, so no compliant tool can work with it. Viralyze is built on that official Meta API, which is why it asks for a Business or Creator account before Auto-DM can go Live.

The switch is free, reversible and takes a couple of minutes. Here is what is behind the rule and what changes when you flip it.

Why can't a personal account use automation?

Personal accounts are designed for private, friends-only use, and Meta does not grant third-party apps access to their comments or messages. Business and Creator accounts are explicitly built for people who run something on Instagram, so they get the API, insights and messaging features that automation depends on.

Any tool that claims to automate DMs from a personal account is either not using the official API or is asking for your password. Viralyze never sees your password; you log in on Meta's own screen and grant specific permissions.

Business or Creator: which should I pick?

Pick Creator if you are an individual (coach, educator, astrologer, fitness trainer) and Business if you are a brand, salon or clinic. For automation purposes both work identically; both can receive comment triggers, story-reply triggers and send private replies through the API.

The practical differences are small: Business accounts can show an address and category more prominently, Creator accounts have slightly different insights. Neither requires a Facebook Page to work with Viralyze.

How do I switch to a professional account?

1. Open Instagram, go to your profile and tap the menu. 2. Open Settings, then Account type and tools. 3. Tap Switch to professional account. 4. Choose a category (for example "Coach" or "Beauty salon"). 5. Choose Creator or Business. 6. Skip the Facebook Page step if offered; it is optional. 7. Return to the app and log in through Meta's screen to connect.

Your handle, followers, posts, highlights and DMs stay exactly as they were. The only visible change is a category label on your profile, which you can hide.

Does switching affect my reach?

In our experience, no measurable change comes from the account type itself. Reach depends on content and audience behaviour. Many creators worry that a professional label hurts them; it is the same label that every large creator account carries.

What does change is that you gain insights, a contact button and the ability to run Auto-DM. A pottery seller who switched to a Creator account, for example, set a "GLAZE" keyword on her process reels the same afternoon and had the automation Live with a follow-gate before her next upload.

What if I switch back to personal later?

If you switch back, API access ends immediately and every automation moves to Needs attention. Your contacts, bookings, shop and analytics in Viralyze are untouched, because those live on your account, not on Instagram's permissions. Switch to professional again and reconnect, and the automations can go Live again.

Frequently asked questions

**Is a professional account free?** Yes. Business and Creator accounts cost nothing and have no minimum follower requirement.

**Do I need a Facebook Page as well?** Not for Viralyze. Some other tools require a connected Page; the official API for Creator and Business accounts does not require one for comment and DM triggers.

**Will my followers be notified that I switched?** No. There is no notification; the only change they might notice is a category label under your name.
