Why Did My Automation Pause Itself?
An automation that stops on its own has usually done exactly what you told it to do. The most common cause is an auto-pause rule set during setup: stop after N days, stop after N DMs, or stop on a date. The second cause is a Needs attention state, which happens when the Instagram connection lapses. Viralyze shows the reason on the automation itself, so you do not have to guess.
This article covers what each cause looks like, how to restart, and how to set limits so the pause lands where you want it.
What does Paused mean versus Needs attention?
Paused means the automation stopped under a rule, or because you tapped pause. Needs attention means it could not keep running because of something external, almost always the Instagram login.
The distinction matters because the fix is different. Paused is restarted with one tap. Needs attention is restarted by reconnecting Instagram through Meta's login screen, after which the automation can go Live again.
Did it hit an auto-pause limit?
If you set any auto-pause during setup, check whether that limit was reached. Viralyze offers three types: after a number of days, after a number of DMs, or on a specific date and time.
Here is a real pattern. A home baker ran a "DIWALI" keyword on her hamper reel with auto-pause at 300 DMs, thinking that was her stock. The reel did better than expected and the automation paused at 300 on day two, while comments kept coming. She raised the limit to 600 and turned it back on. The 300 people already sent were unaffected.
Scheduled automations also have an end date if you set one. A "start on 1 November, stop on 10 November" automation will pause itself on the tenth, regardless of how well it is doing.
How do I turn it back on?
1. Open the automation from the list. 2. Read the status line, which shows the reason: limit reached, end date reached, or connection issue. 3. If a limit fired, edit the limit (raise the count, extend the date, or remove the auto-pause entirely). 4. If the status is Needs attention, tap to reconnect Instagram, log in on Meta's own screen, and return to the app. 5. Set the state back to Live.
Contacts, funnel numbers and DM history are kept through a pause. Nothing resets when you restart.
Why did Instagram stop it?
Instagram's rules can make an automation look paused when it is still Live. The API allows one private reply per comment within seven days, and Viralyze follows this automatically. If a reel's comments are mostly older than seven days, the automation is Live but has nothing eligible to send to.
Also check that the account is still a Business or Creator account. Switching back to a personal account removes API access for private replies, and the automation will move to Needs attention until you switch back.
Should I use auto-pause at all?
Yes, when there is a real reason the offer should end. Auto-pause is for limited seats, launch windows and stock. For an evergreen keyword like "GUIDE" on a pinned reel, leave auto-pause off so it keeps working for months.
A useful habit: set the DM limit a little above what you actually need, and put the end date one day after the offer closes rather than on the day, so late-night comments still get served.
Frequently asked questions
**Does a paused automation still reply publicly to comments?** No. Public replies and DMs both stop while an automation is Paused or in Needs attention.
**If I raise the DM limit, will people who commented during the pause get the DM?** Only if their comment is still within Instagram's seven-day window and has not had a private reply already.
**Can I pause manually and restart later without losing settings?** Yes. Pausing keeps keywords, DM content, follow-gate and schedule exactly as they were.
