Why Can't I Reply to a DM After 24 Hours?

19 October 2026

You cannot reply after 24 hours because Instagram's messaging API sets a 24-hour reply window for business accounts using third-party apps. The clock starts from the person's most recent message to you. Inside the window you can reply from a tool; outside it, you can still reply from Instagram directly. Viralyze's Inbox shows each conversation with its originating comment and lets you reply while the window is open.

This is a platform rule rather than a tool limitation, so it applies to every app built on the official API.

What exactly is the 24-hour window?

When someone sends you a DM, or replies to an Auto-DM, Instagram opens a 24-hour window during which apps connected to your account may send messages back. Each new message from the person resets the clock.

If they go quiet for more than a day, the window closes. The conversation is not deleted and the contact is not lost; the API simply stops accepting outbound messages for that thread until the person writes again.

Does this mean I lose the lead?

No, and this is the point people miss. The thread still exists in Instagram's own inbox. Open Instagram, find the conversation, and reply there as you normally would. That reply is sent as you, from your account, and nothing about the 24-hour rule stops it.

What you lose is the convenience of replying from the Viralyze Inbox for that thread. Every conversation has already been saved as a contact with its source tag, so the person stays in your contacts list for exports and follow-ups by other channels.

How do I keep conversations inside the window?

1. Turn on notifications for Inbox replies so you see them the same day. 2. Reply promptly; each reply from the person restarts the 24 hours. 3. End your message with a question, which invites a response and keeps the thread live. 4. For conversations that are going to take days, move the person to a booking link or your WhatsApp number early, so the follow-up does not depend on the window.

A worked example: a career coach sends an Auto-DM on the keyword "RESUME" with her PDF checklist. People reply "thanks" within minutes. She answers the same evening with "Which role are you targeting?" and most reply, which keeps the window open long enough to send the booking page. The ones who do not reply get a follow-up from her Instagram app a week later.

Why does the comment still show in my Inbox?

The Inbox in Viralyze keeps the originating comment attached to the thread as context, even after the window closes. You can see what post they commented on, what keyword matched and what was sent. This is useful when you pick the conversation up again in Instagram, because you already know what they asked for.

Is the 7-day rule the same thing?

No. There are two separate Instagram rules that get mixed up. The seven-day rule is about the first message: an app may send one private reply to a comment within seven days of that comment. The 24-hour rule is about continuing the conversation after the person has messaged you. Viralyze follows both automatically; you do not need to track either by hand.

Frequently asked questions

**Can I pay to extend the 24-hour window?** No. The window is set by Instagram's API and is the same on every plan of every tool.

**Does my own message reset the window?** No. Only a message from the other person resets it, which is why ending with a question works.

**Will the contact disappear from my list once the window closes?** No. Contacts are permanent; they are created when the conversation starts and stay until you remove them.
