What Permissions Does an Instagram Automation App Need?

19 October 2026

When you connect an automation app, Meta's login screen lists the permissions the app is asking for. Most creators tap through without reading. That is usually fine with a reputable app, but it helps to know what each permission is for, which ones are necessary for comment-to-DM, and which ones should make you pause. Viralyze asks for the set needed to read comments, send replies and run the Inbox, and nothing that touches your feed.

Which permissions are necessary for comment-to-DM?

A keyword automation needs to see comments and send messages, which means the app has to request:

  • Access to your posts and comments, so it can detect when someone comments "LINK" on a specific reel
  • Messaging access, so it can send the private reply and show replies in an Inbox
  • Basic profile details, so it knows which account it is working with and can show your handle in the app
  • Comment management, so it can post the public reply such as "Sent you a DM 💌"

Without those, the core feature cannot work. If an app asks for less than this, it is probably not using the official API at all.

Which permissions are red flags?

Any request to publish content to your feed is unnecessary for DM automation and is worth questioning. The same goes for permission to follow or unfollow accounts, or to like and comment on other people's posts, since those are the behaviours associated with spam bots.

The biggest red flag is not a permission at all: it is an app that asks you to type your Instagram password into its own screen. The official API never needs it. Viralyze never sees your password and nothing is ever posted to your feed.

Why does the app need to read my comments?

Because the trigger is a comment. The app has to read new comments as they arrive to check whether they contain your keyword, including typos and Hinglish spellings like "glaze recipe bhejo". It then sends the matching DM and posts the public reply.

Reading comments does not mean reading your private DMs with friends. Messaging access on the official API is scoped to conversations the app participates in, such as replies to its own Auto-DMs.

What does Viralyze do with those permissions?

Viralyze uses them for exactly four things: detecting keyword comments on the posts you choose (or any post, or story replies), sending the private reply with your link, PDF, product or booking page, posting the rotated public comment reply, and collecting replies to those DMs in the Inbox with the originating comment as context. Analytics such as DMs sent and link clicks are built from that same activity.

As a concrete example, a pottery studio that sets "WORKSHOP" on a reel is granting permission for the app to notice "workshop?" comments and send the booking page where a customer pays ₹2,500 by UPI. The app does not need to post, follow or browse anything else.

How do I review or revoke an app's permissions later?

1. In Instagram, open Settings and privacy, then Website permissions or Apps and websites. 2. Find the app in the Active list. 3. Tap to see which permissions it holds, or remove it entirely.

Removing an app ends its access immediately. If you remove the app by mistake, reconnecting through Meta's login screen restores the automations, which will show "Needs attention" until you do.

Frequently asked questions

**Does Viralyze need a Facebook Page permission?** No. It works with an Instagram Business or Creator account and does not require a Facebook Page.

**Can an app read my old DMs after I grant messaging permission?** The official messaging API is built around conversations the app is part of, such as replies to its Auto-DMs, which is what the Inbox shows.

**Do permissions expire?** Meta may ask you to re-authorise periodically or after a password change. An automation marked "Needs attention" is the usual sign; reconnect and it resumes.
