What Happens After Someone Comments Your Keyword: A Walkthrough

19 October 2026

When someone comments your keyword, a short chain of events runs in about a second: the comment is received, matched, checked against the follow-gate if you use one, answered by DM, acknowledged publicly if you chose to, and logged as a contact. Viralyze shows each of those steps as a number in a funnel, so nothing in the chain is a mystery.

This walkthrough follows a single comment from start to finish so you know what your audience experiences and what you will see on your side.

Step 1: What happens the moment the comment is posted?

Instagram passes the comment to the app through the official API. The app checks the text against your keyword list, ignoring capital letters and allowing for typos, emojis and Hinglish spellings.

Say a language tutor has set "SPANISH" and "spanish class" on a reel. A viewer comments "Spanish!!" and it matches. Another comments "love this" and it does not. The second person is left alone.

Step 2: Does the follow-gate come first?

Only if you turned it on. With the follow-gate active, the app checks whether the commenter follows you. Followers get the DM straight away. Non-followers get a polite message asking them to follow, with up to three nudges, after which the link is sent regardless.

Without the follow-gate, everyone goes directly to the next step. For paid offers, skipping the gate is usually the right call.

Step 3: What does the person receive?

A private message, in the language they commented in, with your content attached. For the tutor, that might be: "Here is the trial class booking page. Pick any slot that suits you this week." followed by a booking page where the learner chooses a 30-minute trial, sees the price, and pays by UPI.

AI variations reword the message slightly for each recipient, so the thread of two hundred learners does not contain two hundred identical DMs.

Step 4: What do other viewers see?

If you enabled the public reply, a short comment appears under theirs, rotated between variations like "Sent you a DM 💌" and "Check your inbox". Other viewers see that the keyword works and start typing it too.

If you did not enable it, nothing public happens and the DM goes out quietly.

Step 5: What if they reply?

The reply lands in the Inbox inside Viralyze, with the original "Spanish!!" comment attached as context. The tutor can answer from the app or from Instagram within the 24-hour window. The conversation is now a contact, tagged with the reel it came from.

Step 6: What do you see on your side?

The automation's funnel updates: comments, matched, delivered, clicked, signed up. If the learner booked, that shows as a signup and the revenue appears on the home screen. Top reels by DMs sent tell you which content to make next.

The full sequence looks like this:

1. Comment received and matched. 2. Follow-gate checked, if enabled. 3. DM sent in the commenter's language. 4. Public reply posted, if enabled. 5. Contact created with source tag. 6. Reply, if any, routed to the Inbox.

Frequently asked questions

**How long does the whole chain take?** About a second from comment to DM, unless the follow-gate is waiting on the person to follow.

**Can a person trigger it twice?** Instagram permits one private reply per comment, so each separate comment can get a reply, but a single comment never produces two DMs.

**What if my Instagram login expires mid-chain?** The automation moves to "Needs attention" and resumes once you reconnect on Meta's login screen.
