What Does 'Built on the Official Instagram API' Actually Mean?
"Built on the official Instagram API" means the app asks Meta for permission to act on your account, Meta shows you a login and consent screen, and from then on the app talks to Instagram through doors Meta deliberately built. Viralyze works this way. It never holds your password, it cannot post to your feed, and the limits it follows are Meta's own.
The phrase is on many product pages. Here is what it changes in practice and how to check whether a tool is telling the truth.
How does an official API tool connect to my account?
You tap connect in the app and are sent to a Meta-hosted login page. You enter your credentials there, on Meta's screen, and approve a list of specific permissions: reading comments, sending messages, and so on. Meta then hands the app a token that allows exactly those actions and nothing more.
The app never sees what you typed. If you change your password later, the token stops working and you simply reconnect. That is why an automation can show a Needs Attention state after a password change: the access was tied to Meta's grant, not to stored credentials.
What is the alternative, and why does it matter?
The alternative is a tool that asks for your Instagram username and password directly, logs in as you from its own servers, and clicks around as though it were a person. Instagram treats that as unauthorised access. Accounts used this way can receive action blocks, forced password resets, or worse, because from Instagram's point of view a stranger is logged in from an unfamiliar location.
Official API access has no such problem. The actions are the ones Meta agreed to, taken through the channel Meta built for them.
Does the official API limit what an automation can do?
Yes, and those limits are the point. Through the API, a tool can send one private reply per comment, within seven days of that comment. It can only message people who commented or replied to a story. It cannot post to your feed, follow people, or like things on your behalf.
Viralyze follows those rules automatically. When a photographer sets "PRESETS" as a keyword and the same person comments it on three different days, each comment can receive its own single reply, and nobody receives a fourth.
Auto-DM also requires an Instagram Business or Creator account, because that is what Meta's messaging permissions apply to.
How can I check whether a tool really uses the official API?
Look for these signs before connecting anything:
- The login happens on a Meta screen, not inside a form the app drew itself.
- The app never asks you to type your password into its own fields.
- A permissions list appears during connection.
- The tool states that nothing is posted to your feed.
- The company is listed as a Meta Tech Provider, which Viralyze is.
If a tool wants your password, close it.
What does this mean for my audience's data?
Through the API the app receives only what your audience does with your automations: the comment, the reply, the click. Viralyze is DPDP Act compliant, treats you as the data fiduciary for your audience data and itself as the processor, and does not sell personal data. Every contact remains exportable by you as a CSV.
Viralyze is not affiliated with Instagram, Meta or Google; it is a third-party app that uses their official interfaces.
Frequently asked questions
**Will using an official API tool get my account banned?** Using Meta-granted access for actions Meta permits is what the API exists for; the risks associated with bans come from tools that log in with your password and simulate activity.
**Why do I have to reconnect sometimes?** Meta's access grants expire and are revoked when you change your password or security settings; reconnecting on Meta's screen restores them without rebuilding your automations.
**Can an official API tool read all my DMs?** It receives the conversations its automations start and the replies to them, which is why the app's Inbox shows the originating comment alongside each thread.
