The Only Three Instagram Metrics a Creator Business Needs

19 October 2026

Three metrics run a creator business: DMs sent, link clicks and revenue. Everything else, including followers, views and likes, is weather. Those three form a chain, demand to action to money, and when one breaks the others tell you where. Viralyze shows all three on its home screen over 7, 30 or 90 days, which is the whole dashboard most creators need.

Why are followers and views the wrong metrics?

Because they measure Instagram's decisions, not yours. The algorithm chooses who sees a reel. A creator can go from 50,000 views to 500,000 and back without changing anything, and revenue may not move at all.

Views also say nothing about intent. A million people watching a reel is not a million buyers. Forty people typing "PRICE" might be forty.

Metric 1: What do DMs sent tell you?

Demand. Every Auto-DM sent is a person who typed a keyword under your post or replied to your story. It is the count of people who asked.

If DMs sent is low while views are high, the reel did not ask clearly enough. Add a spoken and written call to action with one keyword. If DMs sent is high, the content is working and the next two metrics decide whether the business is.

Metric 2: What do link clicks tell you?

Interest that acted. Of the people who received your DM, how many tapped the link, opened the PDF, or reached the checkout? Smart links in Viralyze track clicks per link, and PDFs carry open tracking.

A gap between DMs sent and clicks is a copy problem. The DM's first line, the clarity of what they will get, or a missing price will show up here. It is the cheapest metric to improve, because editing a DM takes a minute.

Metric 3: What does revenue tell you?

Whether the offer works. Clicks that do not become payments point at the checkout page, the price, or the fit between the reel and the product.

Revenue on the Viralyze home screen comes from the shop, courses, sessions and bookings, all at 0% platform fee, so the number is what actually reached you, less payment processing, and paid out weekly.

How do the three read together?

As a funnel. The per-automation view in Viralyze breaks it down: comments, matched, delivered, clicked, signed up. Here is a worked example for one reel from a resume-writing service.

  • 640 comments with "RESUME".
  • 630 matched and delivered as DMs with a ₹1,299 review-session booking page.
  • 215 clicked through to the booking page.
  • 38 signed up, meaning paid bookings in Google Calendar.

Comments to clicks at 630 to 215 is fair. Clicks to paid at 215 to 38 is the step to study. Perhaps the menu needs a cheaper 15-minute option as a first service, with the full review as an add-on. Change it, run the next reel, compare 7-day ranges.

Which secondary number is worth a glance?

Top reels by DMs. It answers "what should I post next?" with evidence rather than instinct. If three of your top five reels by DMs are about the same subtopic, that is the next month's content plan.

Follower growth is also on the home screen, and it is fine to look at. Just do not run the business on it.

Frequently asked questions

**Should I track engagement rate?** Only as a content signal. For the business, comments that trigger DMs are the engagement that matters, and DMs sent already counts them.

**What time range should I compare?** 7 days for a single reel or a DM copy change, 30 days for an offer, 90 days for a content direction.

**Can I export these numbers?** Contacts export to CSV anytime. The metrics themselves live on the home screen and per-automation funnel in the app.

Start the 7-day free trial of Viralyze, no card needed, and watch three numbers instead of thirty.
