Refund Rules When You Sell Digital Products on Instagram
Your refund rules for digital products should be written before anyone pays, in plain language, on the checkout page itself. The common position for PDFs, templates and recorded courses is "non-refundable once delivered", with three sensible exceptions: a duplicate payment, a file that will not open, or the wrong item sent. For bookings, you choose whether the client can cancel and until when. Viralyze supports that choice directly, and when a cancellation is allowed, the refund goes back to the customer automatically.
Clear rules protect you and the buyer. Most disputes come from policies that were never stated, not from policies that were strict.
Are digital products refundable under Indian consumer law?
Indian consumer protection rules apply to digital goods and services, and a buyer can complain if something was not as described or was defective. What the law does not do is give an automatic right to return a working file simply because the buyer changed their mind, provided your policy said so before purchase.
The phrase "before purchase" carries the weight. A policy buried in a DM after payment is far weaker than one printed on the checkout page.
What should a digital product refund policy say?
Keep it to four or five lines. A version a graphic designer selling Canva templates might use:
1. Templates are delivered instantly as a download link and are non-refundable once that link has been opened. 2. If a download fails or the file is corrupted, message me within 48 hours and I will resend or refund in full. 3. Duplicate payments are refunded in full as soon as they are reported. 4. If you bought the wrong pack, I will swap it for one of equal value within 7 days. 5. Refunds, where applicable, go back to the original payment method.
That last line matters in India because UPI, cards and net banking refunds return to the source account, which is also how Viralyze processes them.
When should you refund even if your policy says no?
A refund is cheaper than a public argument. Consider refunding when the buyer expected a live session and got a recording because your reel was ambiguous, when they bought a Hindi product and the file was English, or when the course was clearly not at the level the caption promised.
In each case the error is in the description, not the buyer. Fix the description, refund the buyer, and move on. One refund costs you one sale; an angry comment thread under your launch reel costs more.
Bookings and sessions: set the rule once
For 1:1 sessions, the question is cancellation rather than refund. In Viralyze you decide whether customers can cancel themselves and until when, for example up to 24 hours before the slot. Inside that window the confirmation page shows a cancel button and the payment returns automatically. Outside it, the button is not offered, and any exception is your call.
Pair this with a reschedule option. Many "refund" requests are really "can I move it to Thursday", and a reschedule keeps the sale.
Where to show the policy
- On the checkout page description, above the pay button.
- In the Auto-DM that delivers the link, as one short line: "Instant download, non-refundable once opened".
- On the confirmation page for bookings, where the cancel and reschedule buttons appear.
- In your link-in-bio page footer if you sell several items.
Repetition is not a problem here. A buyer who has seen the rule three times does not dispute it.
Frequently asked questions
**Can I offer a money-back guarantee on a course?** Yes, and some creators do, usually within 7 days and conditional on limited lesson completion. State the condition precisely so it is enforceable.
**How long do refunds take to reach the buyer?** Once issued, bank processing times apply, typically a few working days depending on the method. Tell buyers that in the policy so they do not chase you.
**Do I need to refund if a buyer says they did not receive the DM?** Check the Inbox for delivery first, then resend the link. A resend solves nearly every "did not receive" case without a refund.
