Needs Attention: What It Means When an Instagram Automation Stops

19 October 2026

Needs Attention is the state Viralyze shows when an automation cannot send DMs until you do something. It is not a ban and not a bug. It almost always means one of three things: your Instagram connection needs a fresh login, your account is no longer a Business or Creator account, or the post the automation was watching no longer exists.

The fix normally takes under two minutes. This article walks through each cause and how to avoid the state in future.

What are the four automation states?

Every automation in Viralyze sits in one of four states: Scheduled, Live, Paused or Needs Attention. Scheduled means it is waiting for a start time or your next post. Live means it is watching for keywords. Paused means you or an auto-pause rule stopped it on purpose.

Needs Attention is the only state that asks for a human. The other three are expected parts of a campaign; this one is a flag.

Why does an Instagram automation stop on its own?

The most common reason is an expired Instagram connection. Viralyze works through the official Instagram API, and that access is granted when you log in on Meta's own screen. Meta's permissions do not last forever, and if you change your Instagram password or security settings the connection drops. The automation cannot read comments it is no longer allowed to see, so it flags itself.

The second reason is account type. Auto-DM needs an Instagram Business or Creator account. If you switch back to a personal profile, every automation stops.

The third reason is the trigger disappearing. An automation tied to a specific reel has nothing to watch if that reel is deleted or archived. An automation set to "any post" is not affected by this.

How do I fix a Needs Attention automation?

Open the automation and read the note under the state; it tells you which of the causes applies. Then:

1. For a dropped connection, tap reconnect and log in on Meta's screen again. Your keywords, DM text and schedule stay exactly as they were. 2. For an account type change, switch your Instagram profile back to Business or Creator in Instagram settings, then reconnect. 3. For a missing post, edit the automation and pick a different post, or change the trigger to "any post" if the keyword should work everywhere. 4. Run the live tester: type a sample comment such as "price pls" and confirm it triggers. 5. Turn the automation back to Live.

A worked example: a home baker had a "GLAZE" automation on a reel that she archived during a profile clean-up. The state flipped to Needs Attention within the hour, she re-pointed it to her pinned reel, and the glaze recipe PDF resumed going out.

Will I lose the comments that came in while it was stopped?

Partly, and this is the real cost of ignoring the flag. Instagram allows one private reply per comment within seven days of that comment. If the automation is back within that window, it can still reply to recent comments it missed. Anything older than seven days is gone for DM purposes, although you can still reply publicly in the thread.

That seven-day window is why it pays to check the app the same day you see the state change.

How can I avoid seeing Needs Attention again?

Most repeat cases come from password changes. If you update your Instagram password, open Viralyze straight afterwards and reconnect before your next post goes up. Keep your account type set to Creator or Business rather than toggling it.

For campaigns on a single reel, avoid archiving that reel while the automation is Live. If you want a keyword to survive clean-ups, use the "any post" trigger, which keeps working whichever reels you remove.

Frequently asked questions

**Does Needs Attention mean Instagram has restricted my account?** No. It is a status inside Viralyze about the connection or the trigger, not a message from Instagram about your account standing.

**Will my scheduled automations also show Needs Attention?** If the connection drops, every automation that depends on it is flagged, including scheduled ones, and all of them recover once you reconnect.

**Do I have to rebuild the automation after reconnecting?** No. Reconnecting restores access and the automation keeps its keywords, message, follow-gate and schedule.

Set up your first automation and watch the state change from Scheduled to Live on the 7-day free trial of Viralyze, no card needed.
