My Auto DM Didn't Send: Common Reasons and Fixes

19 October 2026

When an Instagram auto DM does not send, the cause is almost always one of five things: the Instagram account is personal instead of Business or Creator, the comment did not match any keyword, the comment is outside Meta's rules (older than 7 days or already answered privately), the automation is not actually Live, or the Instagram connection has dropped. In Viralyze, a dropped connection shows as Needs attention on the automation, which is the first place to look.

Work through the checks below in order; most problems are fixed at step one or two.

Is the automation actually Live?

Check the state. Every automation is Scheduled, Live, Paused or Needs attention. A Scheduled automation set to "start with your next post" or a future date has not begun yet. A Paused one may have hit its auto-pause limit, for example after 100 DMs or on a set date.

If it says Needs attention, the Instagram connection needs reconnecting on Meta's login screen, usually after a password change or revoked permission.

Did the comment match a keyword?

Open the automation and compare the comment to the keyword list. Matching is not case-sensitive and tolerates Hinglish spellings, emojis and typos, but a comment that shares no recognisable word with your keywords will not trigger.

Example: your keyword is "EBOOK" and the comment says "send me the guide pls". Add "GUIDE" and "guide bhejo" as extra keywords. Then use the live tester, type the exact comment that failed, and see whether it triggers now. The per-automation funnel helps here: if comments are high and matched is low, your keyword list is too narrow.

Does Instagram allow a DM for this comment?

Not always. Instagram allows one private reply per comment, within 7 days of that comment. Viralyze follows this automatically, so:

  • A comment from 8 days ago cannot receive an auto DM.
  • A comment that already got a private reply, including one you sent manually, cannot get another.
  • A second comment from the same person is a new comment and does get its own DM.

This is a Meta rule rather than a fault, and no compliant tool can work around it.

Is the account type right?

Auto DM through the official API needs an Instagram Business or Creator account. If you connected while the account was personal, or switched it back to personal afterwards, nothing will send. Switch to Creator or Business in Instagram settings, then reconnect in the app.

Is it the follow-gate rather than a failure?

If the follow-gate is on, a commenter who does not follow you receives a polite request to follow first, with up to three nudges, before the link. From the outside this can look like "the link did not come". Check the Inbox: the conversation is there with the originating comment as context, and you can see which stage it reached. Followers get the link straight away.

How do I diagnose it in five minutes?

1. Open the automation and confirm it is Live, not Scheduled, Paused or Needs attention. 2. Paste the failed comment into the live tester. 3. Check the comment's age and whether it already had a private reply. 4. Confirm the account is Business or Creator. 5. Look at the funnel: comments, matched, delivered, clicked. The stage where the number drops tells you where the problem is.

If delivered is lower than matched, reconnect Instagram on Meta's screen; if matched is lower than comments, widen your keywords.

Frequently asked questions

**Can I resend a DM to someone who did not get it?** Not automatically, if the comment already had a private reply or is older than 7 days. You can message them from the Inbox or reply manually within the 24-hour window if they messaged you.

**Will a viral spike cause DMs to be skipped?** No. Auto DMs are unlimited on both plans and are sent as comments arrive through the official API.

**Why did the public reply appear but no DM?** Usually a Meta rule case: the comment had already received its one private reply. The public comment reply is a separate action.
