Instagram's 7-Day Private Reply Rule Explained

19 October 2026

Every comment-to-DM automation on Instagram lives under one rule: one private reply per comment, sent within 7 days. It is the rule that makes keyword automation possible, and it is also the one people misunderstand most, usually by expecting it to cover old comments or allow a second nudge. Viralyze follows it automatically, so this article is mainly about what the rule means for how you plan your posts and keywords.

What exactly does the rule allow?

The rule allows an app to send exactly one private message in response to a specific comment, provided the message goes out within 7 days of when the comment was posted. The message appears in the commenter's DMs as a reply tied to their comment.

Three things follow from that:

  • One comment equals one DM, never two.
  • The clock starts when the comment is made, not when you set up the automation.
  • A comment from eight days ago cannot receive a private reply at all.

Can I reply to comments made before I set up the automation?

Only if they are less than 7 days old, and only once each. If you switch on a keyword automation on a reel posted ten days ago, comments from the last week are eligible and older ones are not. In practice, Viralyze automations work well when switched on with the post or scheduled to start with your next post, so every qualifying comment gets its reply in about a second.

This is also why "start with your next post" exists as a scheduling option: you create the automation in advance and it goes live the moment the reel is published.

What if someone comments twice?

Each comment is separate under the rule, so a person who comments "LINK" on Monday and "LINK" again on Wednesday has made two comments and may receive two private replies. In reality this rarely matters, since the first DM already contains the link. Viralyze uses AI variations so the second message reads differently rather than as a duplicate.

What you cannot do is send two private replies to a single comment. If the first DM asked them to follow and they ignored it, the follow-gate handles the nudges inside the same conversation rather than as new private replies.

How does the 7-day rule interact with the 24-hour window?

The 7-day rule covers the first message; the 24-hour window covers the conversation after the person replies. Picture a sneaker reseller who sets "SIZE" on a drop reel:

1. A customer comments "size 9 available?" on day 1. 2. The automation sends one private reply within seconds, with the shop checkout link. That is the 7-day rule satisfied. 3. The customer replies "any discount?", opening a 24-hour window. 4. The reseller answers from the Viralyze Inbox, where the original comment is shown as context, and closes the sale.

Two rules, one conversation, no conflicts.

What happens to the rule if I use the "any post" trigger?

Nothing changes; the rule applies per comment regardless of which post it is on. The any-post trigger simply watches every post for your keywords, so a "PRICE" comment on a reel from last month and one on today's post each get one private reply, as long as each comment is under 7 days old.

Auto-pause is useful here: set an automation to stop after N days or N DMs so an offer does not keep going out after it has ended.

Frequently asked questions

**Can I manually DM someone whose comment is older than 7 days?** Yes, from the Instagram app as a normal message. The 7-day limit applies to private replies sent through the API, not to you messaging by hand.

**Does editing my comment reply reset the 7 days?** No. The clock is tied to the original comment's timestamp and nothing you do resets it.

**Will Viralyze try to send a reply to an old comment and fail?** No. It only sends private replies to comments inside the 7-day window, so there is nothing to clean up.
