Instagram Connection Expired: How to Reconnect
When your Instagram connection shows as expired, the permission token that Meta issued to the app has stopped working. It happens after a password change, a "log out of all devices" action, a switch between account types, a Meta security review, or simply because tokens expire on a schedule. The fix is to log in again on Meta's screen. In the Viralyze app, automations that depend on the connection move to Needs attention until you do.
Nothing is lost during this. Keywords, DM content, bookings, contacts and analytics are stored on your account, not on the token.
Why did my connection expire?
Meta invalidates tokens for a handful of reasons, and most of them are things you did on Instagram rather than in the app. The usual triggers are:
- You changed your Instagram or Facebook password.
- You logged out of all sessions from Instagram's security settings.
- You switched from Creator to Business, or to a personal account and back.
- Instagram asked you to confirm your identity after unusual activity.
- The token reached its normal expiry date.
None of these is a fault in the automation. Because Viralyze uses the official API and never stores your password, it cannot silently log back in; it has to ask you to authorise again.
How do I reconnect Instagram?
1. Open the app. Any automation in Needs attention shows a reconnect prompt at the top. 2. Tap Reconnect. Meta's own login screen opens. 3. Log in with your Instagram credentials. Pick the same account that was connected before. 4. Approve the requested permissions (comments, messages, profile). 5. Return to the app. Automations that were Live go back to Live automatically; check the list to confirm.
Before step 2, make sure you are logged into the correct Instagram account on your phone. If you manage two accounts, Meta's screen will offer the one currently active, and connecting the wrong one creates a second profile instead of restoring the first.
What happens to DMs during the gap?
Comments posted while the connection was down are not lost, but they only receive a DM if they are still inside Instagram's seven-day window when you reconnect. Comments that have already received a private reply will not get another.
A practical example: a tarot reader changed her password on a Friday night, did not notice the Needs attention badge until Sunday, and reconnected then. Comments from Saturday on her "READING" reel were still within seven days, so the automation caught up on those that had not been replied to. Nothing from the previous week's reel was affected because those had already been sent.
How do I stop this happening again?
You cannot prevent routine expiry, but you can reduce surprises:
- Keep notifications on so a Needs attention state is seen the same day.
- After changing your Instagram password, open the app and reconnect immediately.
- Avoid switching account types unless you need to.
- Check the automation list once a week, especially before a launch.
Does reconnecting change my analytics or contacts?
No. The home screen counts, per-automation funnels, contacts list and booking history are unaffected. The only change you might see is a dip in DMs sent for the days the connection was down.
Frequently asked questions
**Do I need to recreate my automations after reconnecting?** No. Every automation keeps its post, keywords, DM content, follow-gate and schedule, and returns to its previous state.
**Will Viralyze ever ask for my Instagram password directly?** No. Login always happens on Meta's own screen; the app only receives a permission token.
**Does Google Calendar also disconnect when Instagram expires?** No. The Google connection is separate and stays active; only Instagram-dependent automations are affected.
