How Viralyze Handles Instagram's One-Private-Reply-Per-Comment Rule

19 October 2026

Instagram's rule is simple and strict: one private reply per comment, sent within seven days of the comment. Viralyze builds the rule into every automation, so each matching comment gets exactly one DM and nothing is attempted outside the window. You never have to count or worry about it.

Understanding the rule, though, changes how you plan keywords, how you handle people who comment twice, and what you can expect from old posts.

What exactly does the rule say?

Through the official API, a business or creator account can send a single private message in response to a specific comment on its own content. That message has to go out within seven days of the comment being made. After that, the comment can no longer be answered privately, although you can still reply publicly in the thread.

The rule exists so that one comment cannot become a stream of unsolicited DMs. It is a good rule for your audience and, as it turns out, for your reply rates.

What happens when the same person comments twice?

They can receive two DMs, one per comment, because the limit is per comment rather than per person. If a follower comments "PRICE" on Monday's reel and "PRICE" again on Thursday's, each comment is its own trigger with its own reply.

Where this matters is a single conversation. Once the person has replied to your DM, you are in Instagram's 24-hour messaging window and can exchange as many messages as you like from the app's Inbox or from Instagram. The one-reply rule applies to the automated opener, not to the chat that follows.

Can I send a follow-up DM if they do not click?

Not automatically from the same comment, and Viralyze will not try. The one private reply is spent when the first DM goes out. This is why the opener has to carry everything: the link, the reason to tap, and a reason to reply.

A practical pattern for a language tutor using "DEMO" as the keyword:

1. Put the booking link in the first line, not the last. 2. Add one sentence about what the demo covers. 3. End with a question that invites a reply, such as "Which level are you at?"

A reply from them opens the 24-hour window, and the conversation can continue naturally.

Does the seven-day window affect old posts?

Yes. If you set up an automation on a reel that has been live for a month, comments older than seven days cannot receive a DM. New comments on that reel can, from the moment the automation goes Live.

This is also why the Needs Attention state deserves same-day action. If a connection drops and you reconnect within a few days, Viralyze can still reply to comments made during the gap, as long as they are inside the seven-day window.

How does the follow-gate fit within one reply?

The follow-gate works as a conversation rather than as extra private replies. The first DM asks the person to follow and reply. Their reply opens the 24-hour window, and the nudges and the eventual link travel inside it. That is why the gate asks for a reply as well as a follow, and why it caps itself at three nudges.

Viralyze designs the flow so that nothing it sends falls outside what Instagram permits, and the per-automation funnel shows comments, matched, delivered, clicked and signed up so you can see every step.

Frequently asked questions

**Does the rule apply to story replies too?** A story reply is already a message from the person, so it opens the 24-hour window directly and your automated response goes inside it.

**Will Viralyze warn me if a DM could not be sent?** The funnel shows comments against delivered DMs, so a gap between the two tells you some comments fell outside what could be answered.

**Is there a daily cap on how many comments can be answered?** The plans include unlimited Auto-DMs, and the only constraints are Instagram's per-comment and seven-day rules, which the app applies for you.
