How to Test an Instagram Automation Before Turning It On

19 October 2026

The safest way to test an Instagram DM automation is to try it before anyone real sees it. In the Viralyze app, every automation setup includes a live tester: you type a sample comment, and the app tells you whether that comment would trigger the DM. If it matches, you are ready; if it does not, you fix the keyword before a single follower is affected.

This matters because a broken automation fails silently. Nobody tells you that "link pls" did not match "LINK", they just stop commenting.

Why test an automation instead of just turning it on?

Because the first hundred comments on a new reel are usually the most valuable, and you only get one private reply per comment under Instagram's rules. If the keyword does not match or the link is wrong, that chance is spent.

Testing takes under a minute and catches the three most common failures: a keyword nobody would type, a link that points to the wrong page, and a follow-gate message that reads as rude.

What should I type into the live tester?

Type the exact comment a real person would leave, not the keyword in isolation. Real comments look like "Link please!!", "LINK 🙏", or "link bhejo yaar". The tester in Viralyze checks each of these against your keyword list and shows a match or no match.

Run at least four variations:

1. The keyword alone, in lowercase ("guide"). 2. The keyword inside a sentence ("can you send the guide?"). 3. A likely typo ("giude" or "gude"). 4. A Hinglish version if your audience writes that way ("guide bhejo").

Viralyze keywords are not case-sensitive and tolerate typos and Hinglish spellings, so most of these should pass. If a variation fails and you expect people to type it, add it as an extra keyword.

A worked example: testing a "CHECKLIST" automation

Say you run a home-organising page and your reel offers a free packing checklist PDF. You set the keyword to CHECKLIST. In the tester, "checklist" passes, "Checklist please" passes, "chekclist" passes thanks to typo handling, but "list" does not match because it is a different word.

You decide many people will just type "list", so you add LIST as a second keyword. Now both routes deliver the same PDF. That one test saved you from losing every "list" comment on launch day.

Does the test send a real DM?

No. The live tester only checks whether the comment would match; it does not message anyone or post anything. Nothing is posted to your feed by Viralyze at any point, test or live.

If you want to see the actual DM on a phone, the honest way is to set the automation live and comment the keyword from a second account you control. Remember that the same account can only receive one private reply per comment, so use a fresh comment each time.

What else should I check before going live?

Open the DM preview and read it as a stranger would. Confirm the link opens the right page, the PDF is the final version, and the public comment reply ("Sent you a DM 💌") sounds like you.

If you turned on the follow-gate, read the nudge text. People who already follow you get the link straight away, so the nudge only reaches non-followers; keep it warm.

Finally, choose the start option deliberately: start now, start with your next post, or a specific date. Many creators test on a draft, then pick "start with your next post" so the automation is live the moment the reel publishes.

Frequently asked questions

**Can I test keywords with emojis?** Yes. Type the emoji into the live tester exactly as a commenter would, and the app shows whether it matches.

**What if my test says no match but I think it should?** Check for an extra word that changes meaning, or add the exact phrase you typed as an additional keyword; multiple keywords per automation are allowed.

**Do I need to test again after editing the DM text?** The keyword match does not change when you edit the message, but re-read the message and link once more, since that is where most live mistakes come from.
