How to Pause and Resume an Instagram DM Automation

19 October 2026

Pausing an Instagram DM automation is a single switch: open the automation, set it to Paused, and comments stop triggering DMs until you resume it. In the Viralyze app you can also tell an automation to pause itself after a set number of days, a set number of DMs, or on a chosen date, which is handy for launches with a deadline or a product with limited stock.

Resuming is the same switch in reverse. Nothing about the keywords or message is lost while it is paused.

When should I pause an automation?

Pause it whenever the DM would be wrong to send. The common reasons:

  • A limited batch sold out and the checkout link now shows "unavailable".
  • A workshop date passed and the booking page has no slots.
  • You changed your price and the DM still quotes the old one.
  • You are travelling and cannot reply to the conversations the DMs start.

Pausing is better than deleting because your analytics, keyword list and message all stay intact for the next run.

How do I pause it manually?

1. Open the automation list in Viralyze. 2. Tap the automation that is Live. 3. Switch it to Paused.

Comments that arrive while it is paused are not queued and sent later; they are simply not answered automatically. If a popular comment comes in during the pause, you can still reply by hand in Instagram within the usual window.

Can an automation pause itself?

Yes. When you set up or edit an automation, choose an auto-pause rule: after N days, after N DMs, or on a date and time. The automation runs normally until the rule is hit, then flips to Paused on its own.

Consider a baker who takes orders for 40 Diwali hampers. She sets the keyword HAMPER on her reel and tells the automation to auto-pause after 40 DMs. Each DM sends the checkout page. Once the fortieth DM goes out, the automation stops, and she updates the public reply to say the batch is closed. No overselling, no awkward refunds.

What do the automation states mean?

Viralyze shows four states so you can read the list at a glance:

  • Scheduled: it has a start time (now, next post, or a date) that has not arrived yet.
  • Live: it is matching comments and sending DMs.
  • Paused: you or an auto-pause rule stopped it; resume anytime.
  • Needs attention: something requires a check, such as your Instagram connection, before it can run.

If you see Needs attention, open the automation and follow the prompt rather than toggling it on and off.

How do I resume, and will old comments get a DM?

Resume by switching the automation back to Live. From that moment new comments trigger as usual.

Comments left during the pause do not get a retroactive DM. Instagram allows one private reply per comment within 7 days, and the automation only acts on comments it sees while Live. If you want to recover those people, a quick manual reply from your Inbox is the cleanest route.

Before resuming, re-read the DM. If you paused because the price changed, update the message first, then flip the switch.

Frequently asked questions

**Does pausing one automation affect my others?** No. Each automation has its own state, so you can pause a sold-out product while a free guide keeps running.

**Can I schedule a resume time instead of doing it by hand?** Set a new start date on the automation and it moves to Scheduled, then goes Live at that time.

**Will my funnel numbers reset after a pause?** No. Comments, matched, delivered and clicked counts carry on from where they were.
