How to Measure Comment-to-Sale Conversion on Instagram

19 October 2026

Comment-to-sale conversion is the share of people who commented your keyword and went on to pay. If 200 people comment "COURSE" and 10 buy, that is 5%. The useful part is not the final figure but the five steps between, because each one points to a different fix. The Viralyze app records those steps per automation: comments, matched, delivered, clicked, signed up, with revenue alongside on the home screen.

Here is how to read each step, what a drop at each one means, and how to compare reels fairly.

What are the five steps in the funnel?

Each step is a count, and each ratio between steps is a question.

1. Comments: how many people typed something on the reel. 2. Matched: how many of those contained your keyword. Viralyze matches regardless of case, typos, emojis or Hinglish spelling. 3. Delivered: how many DMs went out within Instagram's one-reply-per-comment rule. 4. Clicked: how many opened the link inside the DM. 5. Signed up: how many completed the action, an email, a booking or a purchase.

Then revenue, from the home screen, closes the loop.

Which step is dropping, and what does it mean?

Read the ratios, not the totals.

  • Comments high, matched low: people are commenting questions instead of the keyword. Say the word more clearly and put it on screen.
  • Matched high, delivered low: usually a follow-gate in use, or a comment older than 7 days. Decide whether the gate is worth it.
  • Delivered high, clicked low: the DM text is not persuading. Shorten it and put the link's benefit in the first line.
  • Clicked high, signed up low: the page is the problem. Price surprise, too many fields, or a slow page.

A Jaipur jewellery brand running "PRICE" on a reel saw 420 comments, 390 matched, 385 delivered, 260 clicked and 31 purchases of a ₹1,800 bracelet. Their weak step was clicked to signed up, so they added the price to the reel caption. The next reel had fewer clicks and a higher purchase rate, and higher revenue.

How do I compare two reels fairly?

Compare on the same time range and the same offer. A reel from this week against one from last month will differ because of age; a reel selling a ₹299 PDF against one selling a ₹5,000 course will differ because of price.

Use the 7-day range for a fresh reel and the 30-day range for a settled one. Top reels by DMs on the Viralyze home screen gives you a ranked list to start from, and the per-automation view gives the funnel for each.

What is a good comment-to-sale rate?

There is no universal figure, and anyone quoting one is guessing about your audience. What matters is your own trend across reels and across weeks.

Keep a simple note: reel, offer, price, comments, signed up, revenue. After five reels you will know your normal range, and a reel that lands outside it, in either direction, is the one to study.

Does the bio page count towards conversion?

Separately, yes. Tap counts on the bio page tell you about cold visitors; the automation funnel tells you about commenters. Both feed the same revenue figure and the same contacts list, where each buyer carries a source tag.

Export contacts to CSV at the end of a launch and you can see what share of buyers came via a comment, a bio tap or a story reply.

Frequently asked questions

**Does "signed up" include free downloads?** Yes, when the automation sends a lead magnet. For a paid product, signed up means a completed checkout, and revenue reflects it.

**Can I measure conversion for story replies too?** Yes. A story-reply trigger has its own automation and its own funnel, so stories and reels are compared side by side.

**How long after a reel should I judge the rate?** Wait at least seven days. Comments and DMs continue as the reel is rediscovered, and a 48-hour read will understate the result.
