How to Keep Your Instagram DM Automation Compliant

19 October 2026

Compliance for DM automation has two halves. The first is Meta's platform rules, which a good app enforces for you. The second is what you say and what you collect, which no app can do on your behalf. Viralyze handles the platform half automatically: official API, one private reply per comment within 7 days, conversations inside the 24-hour window.

Which rules does the app handle for me?

An app on the official Instagram API handles the technical limits by design. With Viralyze that covers:

  • Login through Meta's own screen; the app never sees your password
  • Business or Creator account required before an automation goes live
  • One private reply per comment, within 7 days of the comment
  • Follow-up replies through the Inbox inside the 24-hour window
  • Nothing ever posted to your feed

You cannot accidentally exceed these from inside the app, which removes the most common compliance worry.

What am I responsible for in the message itself?

You are responsible for the message being truthful and relevant. Meta's content rules still apply to automated DMs, and consumer expectations apply regardless of the channel. Keep to these habits:

1. Match the DM to the post. A "RATES" keyword on a reel about brand collaborations should send your rate card, not a course pitch. 2. Say what the link is. If it leads to a paid checkout, do not call it free. 3. Keep the follow-gate polite. Viralyze sends up to three nudges, then the link anyway, so nobody is held hostage for a follow. 4. Avoid medical, financial or legal claims you cannot back up, even in a short DM.

Is my data collection compliant?

It is if you state the purpose, use the data only for it, and let people opt out. Under India's DPDP Act you are the data fiduciary for your audience and the app is your processor. Viralyze is DPDP compliant and does not sell personal data, but the wording on your lead magnet is yours.

A compliant lead magnet line is short: "Enter your email for the freelance contract template. I will also send occasional templates; unsubscribe any time." That one sentence covers purpose, secondary use and opt-out.

What does a quarterly compliance review look like?

Set a reminder every three months and work through this list:

1. Open your automations and pause any attached to posts whose offer has ended. Set auto-pause by date or DM count on new ones so this step shrinks over time. 2. Reread the DM text on each live automation. Is the link still correct? Is the claim still true? 3. Check the contacts list and delete people who asked to be removed. 4. Review the apps connected to your Instagram under Apps and websites and remove any you no longer use. 5. Confirm your account is still Business or Creator and that no automation shows "Needs attention".

A freelance designer doing this review might find a "TEMPLATE" automation from a reel six months old still sending a link to a template she has since replaced. Pausing it, or updating the link, is a two-tap fix that stops a misleading DM going out.

What should I do if a rule changes?

Rely on the app for platform changes and on your own review for content. Meta adjusts its messaging policies from time to time; an app that is a Meta Tech Provider, as Viralyze is, updates its behaviour to match, so your automations keep working within the current limits. For data law changes, the DPDP principles of purpose, limited use and erasure are stable enough that the habits above keep holding.

Frequently asked questions

**Do I need to add a disclaimer to every automated DM?** No. A DM that answers the comment truthfully needs no disclaimer; add a purpose line only where you collect an email or phone number.

**Can I reuse one automation across many posts and stay compliant?** Yes, with the any-post trigger, as long as the DM is accurate for every post it might fire on.

**Is replying in Hinglish or Hindi a compliance issue?** No. Replying in the commenter's language, which happens automatically, is simply good service and changes nothing about the rules.
