How to Disconnect an Automation App From Instagram

19 October 2026

To disconnect an automation app from Instagram, go to Instagram's settings, open the section for apps and websites, select the app and remove it. If the app was authorised through Meta's login flow, as Viralyze is, also open Business integrations in your Meta or Facebook settings and remove it there. Once removed, the app's access token stops working and it can no longer read comments or send DMs on your behalf.

Nothing else on your account changes. Your posts, followers and existing DM conversations stay exactly as they were.

Where do you remove an app from Instagram?

In the Instagram app, open your profile, tap the menu, go to Settings and privacy, then look for Website permissions or Apps and websites. Active apps are listed with the date they were connected. Tap the one you want and choose Remove.

The exact label moves between Instagram versions, but it always sits in the settings area, and it always lists active, expired and removed apps separately.

Why is there a second place in Meta settings?

Official-API apps for business and creator accounts authorise through Meta, not only through Instagram. That connection appears under Business integrations in your Meta Accounts Centre or Facebook settings.

Removing an app from one place usually revokes its token, but checking both places is the clean approach. If the app still appears in either list, it has not been fully disconnected.

Step by step: disconnecting an automation app

1. Pause or delete the automations inside the app first, if you can. This avoids any "Needs attention" states or half-sent campaigns. 2. In Instagram, open Settings and privacy, then Apps and websites, and remove the app. 3. In Meta Accounts Centre or Facebook settings, open Business integrations and remove the same app. 4. Log out of the app itself and, if you no longer need it, delete it from your phone. 5. Post a test reel or reply to a story with your old keyword. If no DM arrives, the disconnection is complete.

The whole process takes a few minutes. You do not need to change your Instagram password, because an official-API app never had it. If a tool did ask you for your password at any point, change it now.

What stops, and what does not

What stops: keyword matching, Auto-DMs, public comment replies, Inbox syncing, and any analytics that depended on the connection.

What does not stop: conversations already in your Instagram inbox, comments already on your posts, and anything you exported. In Viralyze, your contacts list with its source tags can be exported to CSV at any time before you disconnect, which is worth doing if you plan to switch tools.

Subscriptions are separate from access. Removing an app from Instagram does not cancel billing with that app, so cancel the plan in the app or app store as well.

Reconnecting later

If you remove Viralyze and want it back, reconnect by logging in on Meta's screen again. Your automations and contacts are tied to your Viralyze account, not to the Instagram token, so they return when the connection does. Past automations show as Paused until you turn them on.

A common reason to disconnect and reconnect is switching the Instagram account from personal to Business or Creator, which the Auto-DM feature requires. Make the switch in Instagram first, then reconnect.

Frequently asked questions

**Will disconnecting delete DMs the app already sent?** No. Sent messages remain in both your inbox and the recipient's. Only the app's ability to send new ones ends.

**Do I need to remove the app from Facebook if I never linked a Facebook Page?** Check anyway. Viralyze does not need a Facebook Page, but the Meta login still records an integration you can revoke from Accounts Centre.

**Can an app keep access after I remove it?** No. Removing it invalidates the token. If a tool claims to still be connected, it is either cached or was never using the official API.

If you are moving to a tool that works on the official API with flat pricing, start a 7-day free trial of Viralyze, no card needed, and connect through Meta's login in about a minute.
