How to Change Your Keyword Without Losing Data

19 October 2026

To change a keyword without losing anything, edit it inside the automation you already have instead of deleting and rebuilding. In Viralyze, the funnel numbers, contacts and DM conversations belong to the automation, not to the keyword, so swapping "LINK" for "GUIDE" keeps every count and every lead. In most cases the better move is to add the new keyword next to the old one rather than replacing it, because people will keep typing the old word for days.

Here is when to edit, when to add, and the one situation where duplicating is the right call.

Will editing the keyword reset my analytics?

No. The per-automation funnel (comments, matched, delivered, clicked, signed up) continues from where it was. Contacts created by the automation keep their source tag. Inbox threads stay attached.

The only thing that changes is which future comments match. Comments already replied to are unaffected, and comments from the last seven days that contain the new keyword become eligible if they have not already received a private reply.

Should I replace the keyword or add one?

Add, in almost every case. An automation can have multiple keywords, and each can send a different reply or the same one.

Picture a skincare seller whose reel caption said "comment SERUM". She wants to switch to "GLOW" for a new caption on the same reel. If she replaces SERUM with GLOW, anyone reading the old caption in a repost or screenshot and typing SERUM gets nothing. If she adds GLOW and keeps SERUM, both work. After two weeks, when SERUM comments have stopped, she removes it.

Replace only when the old word is now wrong, such as a keyword that was a product name you no longer sell.

How do I edit the keyword step by step?

1. Open the automation from the list. 2. Tap the keywords field. 3. Add the new keyword; optionally remove the old one. 4. If the new keyword should send a different message, set that reply for it. 5. Use the live tester: type a sample comment with the new word and confirm it matches. 6. Save. The automation stays Live throughout; there is no need to pause.

Keywords are not case-sensitive and tolerate typos and Hinglish spellings, so you do not need to add "glow", "Glow" and "GLOW" separately. You may want "glow pls" style phrases only if the live tester shows a miss.

Can different keywords send different DMs?

Yes. This is the main reason to add rather than replace. One Viralyze automation on one reel can have "PRICE" send the checkout page and "GUIDE" send the free PDF. The funnel shows both under the same automation, and contacts are tagged with the source.

This also means you can test a new keyword on the same post without touching the one that already works.

When is duplicating the right move?

Duplicate when the new keyword belongs to a different post or a different offer with its own numbers you want to track separately. Editing is for the same post and the same purpose. If you duplicate, the new automation starts its funnel from zero and the original keeps its history, which is sometimes exactly what you want for a fresh launch.

Frequently asked questions

**Will people who already got the DM get it again with the new keyword?** No. Instagram allows one private reply per comment, and a new keyword does not re-trigger comments that were already replied to.

**Can I rename the automation at the same time?** Yes. The name is a label for you; changing it does not affect matching or data.

**Do I need to pause before editing?** No. Edits apply to the next matching comment and the automation keeps running.
