How to Capture Emails From Instagram Comments

19 October 2026

To capture emails from Instagram comments, you need two things: a keyword that triggers a DM and a lead magnet that asks for an email before handing over the goods. In the Viralyze app the lead magnet is one of the DM content types, so the commenter gets the message, types their email, receives the file, and the address appears in your contacts list tagged with the reel it came from.

Instagram does not give you your followers' emails. This is how you earn them, one useful freebie at a time.

Why collect emails if I already have followers?

Because reach on Instagram changes with the algorithm, and an email list does not. A follower sees a fraction of your posts; an email reaches the inbox every time.

Emails also travel with you. If you ever move platforms or launch a course, the list comes along, exported as CSV from your contacts whenever you like.

How do I set up the email capture?

1. Create a lead magnet in Viralyze: name it, upload or paste the freebie, and it gets its own page that asks for an email. 2. Create an automation on the reel promoting the freebie. 3. Add the keyword, say TEMPLATE, plus variants like "templates" and "template pls". 4. Choose the lead magnet as the DM content. 5. Write the DM line, for example "Drop your email on the next screen and the template is yours." 6. Test the keyword in the live tester and go live.

The commenter never leaves the flow: comment, DM, email, download.

A worked example: a freelance designer's proposal template

A freelance brand designer posts a reel on how she prices projects and offers her proposal template. Keyword: TEMPLATE.

The DM reads, with AI variations so each one differs slightly: "Here is the proposal template I use for every client. Pop your email in and it will be with you in a second." The person enters an email, downloads the template, and the designer's contacts list now shows that email with the source tag of that reel.

A month later she can export the list, see which reel produced the most addresses, and email those people when her pricing workshop opens.

What does the funnel look like?

Each automation shows comments, matched, delivered, clicked and signed up. For email capture, "signed up" is the number that matters: it tells you how many people were willing to trade an email for the freebie.

If clicks are high but sign-ups are low, the freebie is interesting but the ask feels too big. Try a shorter, more specific freebie. If comments are high but clicks are low, the DM wording needs work.

Is this allowed under Indian data rules?

Viralyze is DPDP Act compliant and does not sell personal data. You, the creator, are the data fiduciary for your audience's information, and the app acts as processor. In practice that means: say what you will send, send only that, and make it easy to stop.

A line in the lead magnet like "I send one email a week on design pricing, no spam" sets expectations and improves sign-up quality.

Frequently asked questions

**Can I capture emails from story replies too?** Yes. Use the story reply trigger and attach the same lead magnet, which works well for time-limited freebies.

**Do emails from bookings and shop sales go to the same list?** Yes. Every lead from automations, links, bookings and purchases sits in one contacts list, each with its source tag.

**Does the free trial include lead magnets?** Yes. Lead magnets and contacts export are part of the Starter plan and the 7-day trial.

Start your 7-day free trial of Viralyze, no card needed, and turn your next freebie into the start of your email list.
