How to Build a Waitlist for a Course Launch Using Instagram

19 October 2026

You build a course waitlist on Instagram by giving people one word to comment or reply, collecting their email in return for something useful, and keeping the list warm until cart opens. The keyword makes joining effortless, the email means you can reach them on launch day, and the warm-up lesson means they already trust you. Viralyze handles the keyword Auto-DM, the lead magnet with email capture and the course checkout, so the whole launch runs from one place.

Here is a four-week plan that fits a solo creator.

Why build a waitlist instead of just launching?

Because a launch to a cold audience depends on who happens to see the post that day. A waitlist is a group who raised their hand in advance.

It also lets you test the promise before you finish the course. If 40 people join the waitlist from a reel about "landing your first freelance client", you have a signal. If 4 join, the topic or pitch needs work, and you have found that out before recording twenty lessons.

Week one: the keyword and the lead magnet

Pick a keyword that names the outcome, not the mechanism. "FIRSTCLIENT" is better than "WAITLIST" because it reads as the thing they want.

Create a lead magnet in Viralyze that collects an email and delivers a short PDF: "The 7-message DM sequence that got me my first freelance client". The Auto-DM says: "Here's the sequence. I'm opening a small course on landing your first three clients next month; the people on this list hear first and get the early price."

Set the automation on "any post" plus an "any story" reply trigger, so FIRSTCLIENT works everywhere for the whole month.

Weeks two and three: keep asking, keep giving

Post two or three reels a week on the course topic, each ending with "comment FIRSTCLIENT". Vary the angle: one mistake, one success, one behind-the-scenes of building the course.

Send the list a second free lesson by email in week three. People who have received two useful things before you ask for money respond very differently from people who have received none.

Watch the per-automation funnel. Comments to sign-ups tells you how well the DM converts; if it drops, rewrite the DM, not the reel.

How many people do I need on the waitlist?

There is no fixed number, and no honest tool will promise a conversion rate. A useful mental model is to decide the revenue you want, divide by the course price, and assume only a fraction of the list will buy.

If the course is ₹2,999 and you want ₹60,000, you need 20 buyers. A list of 200 interested people gives you room; a list of 30 does not. Build until the number feels comfortable, then launch.

Week four: open cart

1. Create the course in the Viralyze shop with its checkout page; 0 percent platform fee, UPI and cards, weekly payouts. 2. Export the waitlist contacts to CSV and email them first, 24 hours before anyone else. 3. Change the FIRSTCLIENT automation DM to send the checkout page instead of the lead magnet. 4. Post the launch reel with "comment FIRSTCLIENT to enrol" and set the automation to auto-pause on the cart-close date. 5. Post a closing story two days before the deadline with a story-reply trigger on the same keyword. 6. On the home screen, watch revenue alongside DMs and clicks.

After the launch

Keep the keyword live but switch the DM back to the lead magnet. People who find the reels later join the list for the next cohort, and the contacts list keeps growing between launches with source tags showing which reel brought each person.

This is how Giftin Wilson, a fitness creator, doubled course sales in a month: the Auto-DM kept working between posts.

Frequently asked questions

**Should I use the follow-gate on a waitlist keyword?** Only on reels aimed at new audiences. For your existing followers it adds no value, and Viralyze sends followers the link straight away anyway.

**Can I run the waitlist from stories alone?** You can, but stories mostly reach existing followers. Reels bring in people who do not follow you yet, so use both.

**What if I have no course ready yet?** That is the right time to build a waitlist. The number of sign-ups tells you whether to build it, and the questions people reply with tell you what to put in it.

Start your 7-day free trial of Viralyze, no card needed, and open your waitlist this week.
