How Many Auto DMs Can You Send Per Day on Instagram?

19 October 2026

There is no fixed number of Auto-DMs you can send per day when they are triggered by comments through the official Instagram API. Instagram's limit is structural, not numeric: one private reply per comment, within seven days of that comment. If your reel collects 2,000 keyword comments, 2,000 replies are permitted. Viralyze includes unlimited Auto-DMs on both Starter and Pro, and applies the one-reply rule automatically so you never have to count.

The numbers people quote online, like "50 DMs a day", usually refer to cold outreach from a personal account. That is a different activity with different risks.

Is there a daily DM limit on Instagram for automation?

No published daily limit exists for comment-triggered private replies. The constraint is that each reply must answer a specific comment and go out within seven days of it. Beyond that, Meta has not published a number.

This is why comment keywords scale in a way that cold DMs never could. A tool does not pick the recipients; your audience chooses themselves by commenting.

Why cold DM limits do not apply here

Manual or bot-driven outreach to people who never interacted with you is where Instagram applies throttling and action blocks. Those limits are not disclosed and shift with account age and behaviour.

A keyword reply is the opposite: the person started the conversation. From Instagram's side it is the same action as you tapping "reply privately" under a comment, just performed by an app you authorised on Meta's login screen.

What happens on a big launch day?

Suppose you announce a cohort on a reel with "comment JOIN for the enrolment link" and the reel takes off. Here is roughly how the day looks with automation running.

1. A comment arrives containing "join", "JOIN", "Join!!" or a Hinglish spelling, and matches the keyword. 2. If the follow-gate is on and the commenter does not follow you, they receive a polite nudge to follow, up to three times, before the link. 3. The DM with your checkout page goes out in about a second. 4. A rotated public reply like "Sent you a DM 💌" appears under the comment. 5. The conversation lands in the Inbox with the original comment as context, and the commenter becomes a contact.

None of these steps has a quota. Omkar Gunjal (@omkargunjal) runs his on "PRICE" comments and the DMs go out while he is shooting. The volume is set by his audience, not by a counter.

Where limits do exist

  • The 24-hour reply window: once someone replies to your Auto-DM, you can respond freely inside Instagram's 24-hour window. After that, the conversation waits until they message again.
  • The 7-day comment window: a comment older than seven days cannot receive an automated private reply.
  • One reply per comment: a second automation cannot DM the same comment again.

Viralyze respects all three without configuration. If a case falls outside them, the automation shows "Needs attention" rather than failing silently.

Should you pause automation at volume?

Not for safety reasons, but you may want auto-pause for business reasons. You can set an automation to stop after N DMs, N days or on a date. A cohort with 40 seats might pause after 300 DMs so late commenters get a waitlist message instead.

Scheduling also helps on launch day. Start with your next post, let the automation run for the first 72 hours when most comments arrive, then switch the DM to an evergreen offer.

Frequently asked questions

**Will Instagram block my account if a reel gets thousands of comments?** Not for replying to them through the official API. Each reply answers a real comment, which is permitted behaviour.

**Can I DM people who commented last month?** No. Comments older than seven days are outside the private reply window, so an automation set today cannot reach them.

**Does unlimited mean unlimited on the Starter plan too?** Yes. Starter at ₹199 a month includes unlimited Auto-DMs along with comment, any-post and story triggers.
