How Long Should an Instagram Auto DM Be?

19 October 2026

Three to five lines. That is the length at which an automated DM reads like a person replied and the link is still visible without scrolling. Roughly 30 to 60 words: acknowledge the comment, give one or two lines of context, put the link on its own line. The exception is when the message itself is the thing they asked for, a recipe or a chapter of notes; Viralyze turns those long messages into a downloadable PDF so length stops being a problem.

Why is shorter usually better in a DM?

Because a DM opens on a phone, often inside the requests folder, and the person reads it while deciding whether to tap or ignore. A wall of text looks like a broadcast. Three lines look like a reply. The link also sits in view instead of below the fold. In the per-automation funnel, a long DM often shows a healthy "delivered" number and a weaker "clicked" one; shortening the message is the first thing to try.

Length rules by DM type

  • Link drop: 2 to 3 lines. "Here is the guide 👇 [link]. Reply if it does not open."
  • Price reply: 3 to 4 lines. Price, what is included, link, payment method.
  • Booking: 3 to 4 lines. Link, format (Meet, phone, WhatsApp), what to keep ready.
  • Follow-gate nudge: 2 lines. Reason plus promise of the link.
  • Lead magnet: 3 lines. What it is, the link, what to reply with.
  • Content DM (recipe, notes, script): as long as it needs to be, sent as a PDF.

The pattern is that every DM with a link stays under five lines, and every DM that is the content gets converted to a file.

Concrete example: trimming a 140-word coaching DM

A business coach's original CALL DM ran to 140 words: a thank-you, a paragraph about her method, a list of what the call covers, the link, and a sign-off. Clicks were low. The rewritten version in Viralyze is 41 words: "Thanks for commenting CALL. The discovery call is 20 minutes on Google Meet, free, and we map your next 90 days. Pick a slot here: [booking link]. You will get the Meet link in the calendar invite." Same offer, four lines, link in view. The method paragraph moved to the booking page, where someone who is already interested reads it.

Does Instagram limit DM length?

Instagram has a character limit on messages, and very long texts are awkward on a phone regardless. Viralyze sidesteps this by converting long messages to a PDF with open tracking, so you never hit the limit and you learn whether the file was opened. If you want to send a 2,000-word guide, write it in full and let the conversion happen; do not split it across multiple DMs, because Instagram allows one private reply per comment.

How to cut a DM without losing the sale

1. Delete the greeting line unless it names the keyword. 2. Replace any sentence about you with a sentence about what they get. 3. Move details to the page the link points to. 4. Put the link on its own line. 5. End with one instruction, not a paragraph of options.

Use AI variations so the trimmed message still reads differently to each person, and keep the public reply even shorter than the DM.

When a longer DM is right

Keep it long when the reader asked for content, when the content is the product (a paid script or report), or when the audience reads carefully, such as exam students. Even then, open with the content and keep any pitch to one line at the end: "Want the full batch? Comment CLASS on any reel."

Frequently asked questions

**Does a longer DM get flagged as spam by Instagram?** Length alone is not the issue; Viralyze sends through the official Meta API within Instagram's rules, and AI variations keep messages from being identical.

**Should the link go in the first line?** For pure link drops, yes; for price and booking DMs, one line of context first then the link on its own line tends to read better.

**Can I A/B test two lengths?** Run two reels with the same keyword and different DM lengths, then compare the delivered-to-clicked step in each automation's funnel.
